Can You Use Natural Stone in the Shower?

With the right design input, you can transform your shower into a thing of beauty. Natural stones such as marble, granite and slate are perfect for helping you achieve the look you want. Before making a selection, consider the different options and what goes into care and maintenance.

Types of natural stones

Marble, slate and granite are the most common natural stones used in showers. However, limestone can be just as suitable.

Marble

With striking lines and light colouring, marble has become the stone of choice for showers. It can create an elegant and classic feel in any space. If you decide to go with marble, make sure to choose the highest grade available. Higher marble grades have smaller veins, which reduces their susceptibility to moisture damage.

Granite

If you need a highly durable natural stone, then granite is the best option for your shower. Granite is more resistant to damage and is easier to maintain than other natural stones. Not only is it durable, but it also creates an industrial and sophisticated look. Although granite is more durable, it must be installed and sealed correctly to ensure longevity.

Slate

Due to the range of colour options available, slate is the most common natural stone used in showers. Slate is low in porosity, making it perfect for humid climates. It is also easy to clean and maintain. If you choose slate to improve the look of your shower, select the higher-quality options. Some kinds of slate are flaky and wear out faster over time.

Limestone

In its natural state, limestone is spongy and porous. With its colours and veining, limestone gives your shower a more contemporary and relaxed feel. It is also bacteria-resistant, making it beneficial in showers where there is a lot of moisture. However, because of its high porosity, it can be hard to care for and maintain.

Maintenance

As with any other material, your natural stone installation must be properly cared for to ensure it lasts. In cases where it is installed in moisture-rich areas like showers, it requires extra care. Here are some ways to keep your natural stone in tip-top shapeꓽ

  1. Clean regularly. The general recommendation is that you clean your natural stone installation weekly. Avoid cleaning products that contain harsh ingredients and those that are very soapy. Use products that are non-acidic with a pH of about 7.
  2. Remember the grout. When cleaning, don’t forget that grout is also prone to mould and mildew. Use a non-abrasive grout cleaner that is safe for natural stone.
  3. Remove excess water. After showering, use an absorbent cloth to wipe stone surfaces to remove water. Excess water leads to mildew and can cause natural stone to appear dull.
  4. Ensure proper ventilation. Good ventilation will also prevent mould and mildew from growing. After you have wiped the surface to remove excess water, open your shower doors to speed up the drying process.
  5. Re-seal stone regularly. Depending on the type of stone, consider getting it re-sealed routinely to prolong its life. Most natural stones need to be re-sealed on an annual basis. Re-sealing helps prevent the growth of bacteria and keeps your shower sanitary.
